Can you explain Unity prayer?

I was raised in a traditional church. I have attended a couple of Unity services and have called the Unity Prayer line a couple of times and I am curious. The prayers do not sound like any prayer I have heard in the past. Would you explain Unity prayer to me?

This is a frequently asked question by people unfamiliar with the Unity prayer style. In a traditional prayer the person is asking/seeking God to respond and/or answer our request. God is to provide what is missing or not present in our lives. Unity teaches that everything is already available and present in our lives. We don't ask for something we don't have; we seek to release and become aware of what is already present within.

Our prayer style is referred to as affirmative prayer. We affirm or acknowledge what is already true even in the face of evidence to the contrary. We affirm health in the face of illness, prosperity in the face of apparent lack, or peace in the face of conflict. Our prayers are always in the present tense. We acknowledge the apparent issue present but affirm a higher truth in the midst of the present condition or circumstance.

I hope this brief explanation is helpful. For a deeper and fuller understanding I would suggest Eric Butterworth's “The Universe Is Calling” or Frances Foulks’ “Effectual Prayer” as good how-to books on affirmative prayer.
